This is it! This is the one recipe that has been with me from the beginning. It began quite modestly, as many recipes do. But, over time, it became the most healing and nutritious part of my day. I have often felt that if I had only one dish to sustain me and to heal my body, this would be the one. Luckily, I also have access to leafy greens, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, so I am able to diversify for my nutritional needs.
I didn’t receive any nutritional advice from my gastroenterologist. You know, the doctors who should be the most familiar with our digestive systems and how to heal them. The only suggestion she made after finding a 5-6 cm tumor in my sigmoid colon was to eat oatmeal every day. Hey! That’s better than nothing. And not knowing anything else about nutrition at the time, that’s exactly what I did. I began by making oatmeal in the traditional way: rolled oats in a pot of boiling water. They weren’t organic and they weren’t gluten-free, but I didn’t know the difference, or I didn’t think it mattered, so I did the best I could.

If I felt like adding anything to the oatmeal, it was usually one type of berry and maybe some cinnamon. For a short period of time, I would add ghee as well for a semi-buttery flavor. Once I decided that I needed to eat a raw diet for 90 days, I began to expand my recipe options and incorporated soaked oats into my diet. I had learned a lot about nutrition in the three months leading to this decision. I was able to mix many ingredients that have healing properties based on what I could afford and, of course, flavors that complemented each other.
After the 90-day period of eating soaked oats, I returned to cooking my oats and creating the combination of ingredients that are in this dish. I find that soaking oats requires a little more advanced meal planning, so cooking the oats is an easier way for me to prepare them. This recipe has many ingredients and uses various kitchen equipment. For any clarification on the process, the links to the video below may be of some help. Ingredients:
- 9 Brazil Nuts
- 2 tbsp Almonds
- 2 tbsp Apricot Kernels
- 9 Deglet Dates
- 4 tbsp Goji Berries
- 1/4 cup Steel Cut Oats
- 1/4 cup Barley Flakes
- 3 oz Frozen Strawberries – diced
- 3 oz Frozen Cherries – sliced
- 3 oz Frozen Blueberries
- 4 tbsp Cacao Powder
- 2 tbsp Ceylon Cinnamon
- 1 tbsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Mushroom Powder
- pinch of Black Pepper
- 3 tbsp Hemp Hearts
- 3 tbsp Flax Seed – ground
- 3 tbsp Chia Seed – ground
- 1 tbsp Black Cumin Seed – ground
- 1 Apple – diced
- 1 Banana – sliced
- 1 Kiwi – quartered and sliced
- 4 cups water/plant milk
Directions: (Makes 4-5 servings)
Add brazil nuts, almonds, apricot kernels, dates, goji berries, steel cut oats, and barley flakes into a blender. Heat 2 cups water/plant milk to just below boiling and add to blender. Cover and let soak while preparing the remaining ingredients. Add strawberries, cherries, and blueberries to large pot. Heat remaining 2 cups water/plant milk to just below boiling and add to the large pot. Add cacao, cinnamon, turmeric, mushroom powder and black pepper to large pot and stir until smooth. Grind flax seeds, chia seeds, and black cumin seeds in spice/coffee grinder. Slowly add the mixture to the pot while stirring. Add hemp hearts to the pot. Blend the soaked ingredients on low until desired consistency. Add mixture to the large pot and combine. Add apple, banana, and kiwi to the large pot and incorporate into the cereal.
